This browser-based utility decodes netstrings. It can parse both netstring formats – length-prefixed netstrings and angle bracket-wrapped hexadecimal netstrings. If the input has a length-prefixed format, it removes the byte length prefix, the colon symbol, and the trailing comma, and returns the encapsulated data. If the inputs have a hex format, then it removes the angle brackets, converts hex bytes to a byte stream, interprets it as UTF8-encoded data and returns the encapsulated Unicode string. If the input data contains multiple netstrings, they can be decoded and merged together in the output or they can be separated by space characters. The "Separate Words with Spaces" option controls this behavior. If the input netstring has been recursively encoded and has double protection, then it can be decoded twice by enabling the "Double Decode" option. This example decodes a netstring-encoded John Lennon quote. The quote contains five words that have been encoded word-by-word. To do the conversion from a netstring to a string, it removes the byte lengths and colons before the words and commas after the words. It separates the words with a space character and prints a clean, well-formatted sentence.
In this example, the input contains eight netstrings that have the hexadecimal form. Each netstring is on its own line and the lines are decoded one-by-one. It's easy to recognize the input format as each line starts and ends with an angle bracket. To find the contents, the bytes are converted to characters using a UTF8 decoder. It turns out that the list contains time units.
This example loads a recursive netstring that contains beautified whitespace characters. To break the recursion, we use the double-decode option, which performs the decoding process twice. We also activate options to convert Unicode whitespaces to regular whitespaces. These options print a physical line break instead of the "↵" symbol, a physical tab instead of the "⇥" symbol, and a physical space instead of the "⎵" symbol.
